All I Know Is That I Know Nothing

Well, classes have started and summer has come to an end. Between school and changing the blog's layout, I haven't really written anything at all. But we all know the Earth will continue to turn whether I've updated my blog or not.

I've always anticipated the first day of school each year. Butterflies in the stomach, racing heart, the whole nine yards. I'm usually and anxious mess but excited nonetheless.The first day of a new semester is like a fresh start. A clean slate. New chances to attempt good first impressions. This first day of school in particular was quite exciting for me. This was the first day of my last semester at community college. After four years I will finally be getting my Associate of Science degree and moving on to a University. Really, it's about damn time.

I've always been excited to take new classes too. I love having new professors, new classmates, and even new books. I've had quite a bit of variety in my choice of classes. Between high school and college I've taken art, welding, government, yoga, auto-tech, human sexuality, Zoology, and kickboxing. Phew! And that's only a few of them. One of my classes this semester is philosophy. Though this class does fulfill certain requirements, I honestly couldn't wait to take the class. Human thought and perception has always amazed me. It's amazing to think that no one person on this planet will ever experience the exact same life as anyone else. Everyone has been born with they're own distinct set of thoughts, opinions, and aspirations. It's so beautiful and yet so overlooked. During our first class meeting my philosophy professor spoke about the meaning of philosophy and how it has changed over the years. Literally the word philosphy means "the love of wisdom". Years and years ago people lived in a time where knowledge was cherished and books were treasured. The whole concept of school and academics was started by groups of people who actually wanted to learn more about life and the the world around them. Back then school was not the rigid institution it is today. People would go to great lengths to even obtain books. These days college is a tool to train people for their careers. People are paying big money to go through the motions for that little piece of paper. People today don't realize how lucky they really are. I know, I know it sounds so cliche but it really is true. Almost every child in America is guaranteed 13 (practically) free years of schooling. So many kids today dick around and throw all of that down the drain. Now, I wasn't perfect in high school. I did my fair share of screwing up. Over the years, however, I've grown to appreciate everything in the world there is to learn about. I find it liberating just knowing that at any time I choose I can learn about whatever I want. I can learn to fix a transmission, or what was happening in Australia in 1821, or even the anatomy of the African rhino. It's so frustrating to me that a large part of our population is choosing not to use their brains. People aren't asking enough questions! What is reality? Do our dreams mean anything? Do you think the government is monitoring all of your phone calls? What would life be like if people had tails? What do you see when you look at this picture? Just use your brain! Try finding answers to those questions you've always wondered about. Next time you're talking with someone see if you can go an entire conversation without mentioning television, celebrities, pop culture, etc. I think a lot of you will be quite surprised and at a loss for words...

Some things lately that just piss me off...

People who drive down the highway with a loose dog in the back up their pick up.
When we're sitting in a nearly empty movie theater and people sit in the seats either right in front of us or two seats to the left of us. Out of 500 seats why?!
When you're standing in a checkout line and the asshole behind you is practically six inches behind you. ---You moving forward does NOT make the line go faster!
Anyone who tailgates me on the road. If you don't like the speed I'm going, then go around!
The parking meter Nazis giving out $20 tickets every 5 minutes.
A gazillion emails letting me know that I've won the UK lottery and I can make my penis bigger.
Never getting paid enough, but just enough to keep me crawling back for more.
When someone eats all of the food left over and then puts the empty container back in the fridge.
When college kids do stupid things in horror flicks.
$30 over draft fee for going over less than a dollar.
People who give judgmental stares. Mind your own damn business.
Hour long infomercials after 2 o’ clock in the morning.
Parents who don’t watch their kids in the parking lot.
When technology doesn’t work.
Not having enough money 90% of the time.
That I have word salad all of the time. I can’t go an entire conversation without mixing up some words.
Shaving.
The fact that someone who gets caught selling pot on the side can spend more time in jail than a cold blooded murderer.

Saturday 9 - On Broadway

1. Have you ever seen a Broadway play? If yes what and when?
Yeah, I've seen a few. I remember seeing Cats, Beauty and the Beast, and The Lion King (that one was really good).

2. Tell us about one strange event in your life this week.
My fiance who hates TV (because it rots your brain and is horrible blah blah blah) signed up for cable two days ago.

3. Have you ever lied to "get the guy/gal"?
If you have to lie to get a guy then you shouldn't be with them in the first place.

4. Tell us about your best friend.
We could have an entire conversation consisting only of movie/TV quotes.

5. What was the best vacation that you ever had?
My favorite vacation was a seven day Caribbean cruise in the Virgin Islands. So much fun and so much good food!

6. What was the last big purchase you made?
Hah, I can't even remember. It's been Ramen and mac & cheese for the past few months.

7. What is your favorite non-alcoholic drink and when did you start drinking it?
Strawberry daiquiris are delicious with or without booze!

8. When was the last time someone did not believe you?
Probably yesterday. My fiance is an all knowing super being who couldn't possibly be wrong. :)

9. You have signed on to direct a romantic comedy. Who are your stars?
Hmmm ... I guess I'd go with Zooey Deschanel and Jason Schwartzman.

Like a Parasite, I Wanna Crawl All Over You

My furry little bundle of joy has brought home yet another surprise. Fleas!! This is my first encounter with these buggers and I am ripping my hair out. If you know me at all then you know that bugs freak me out to no extent. So of course the first thing I did was go online and Google. A lot. I was trying to find a general consensus on how to take care of the situation. After surfing the web for an hour I came up with a general game plan. I also picked up a few tips that I had never even heard of.

When attempting to get rid of fleas you are declaring war! Clear one day completely and get the pets and kids out of the house if you can.

The very first thing I did was put a flea collar in the collection tank of my vacuum. This is suppose to help kill any bugs or eggs sucked up in the process. Most flea collars are the same so I bought a cheaper one from Wal-mart.

Next you have to do a lot of vacuuming and a lot of laundry. Wash all bedding, all clothes on the floor, all pet beds, all cloth pet toys, and any drapes that touch the ground in very hot water. Pretty much any fabric in your house. Then I decided to use a flea powder to put on the furniture and carpet. I was really nervous about doing this because most bug killers are very toxic and harmful. So I chose Natural Defense fabric powder from Sentry. It's safe to use around kids and pets so I don't have to freak out about my dog walking across treated carpet. Basically you sprinkle the powder all over the carpet and use an inside broom to work the powder further into the carpet. Concentrate on ares the animals usually hang out. You can vacuum after only an hour but they suggest that you wait 24 hours. Fair warning, this one may set you back a little. One 10 oz bottle runs for about $17. I used almost three but I was really, really thorough.

Another key factor is to treat your animals the same day you clean the house. Or else all that work will be for nothing. First I give them a thorough scrub down in the tub. I use the Sentry flea shampoo. It works and it actually smells good. It doesn't have that weird chemical smell.

Last but not least put your pets on some sort of flea and tick prevention. Honestly, I couldn't afford some of the more popular brands so I'm giving Hartz Ultraguard a try.

Well, when this is all done and over with I will let you guys know if they're really gone for good. Wish me luck!

***UPDATE - August 28, 2009***

They're gone! The fleas are really gone! The Natural Defense flea powder worked so well. During this process I also discovered that the power also deodorizes the fabric it is being used on. Got a couch that smells like dog? Not anymore! After letting the powder sit for 24 hours everything in my house smells clean. The Hartz flea medication worked really well too. No fleas, no ticks, no bugs at all! So, yes, I would definitely recommend these products to anyone. They worked great!

We have two dogs (Ash & Ramsey), a leopard gecko (Joey Gecko), two rats (Beaker & Jill Nye), and a molly (molly hatchet). Needless to say, we love all kinds of animals. I’m also very interested in movies, video games, technology, crafting, cooking, and so much more. My fiancé loves to garden, read, work out, and he also plays video games (yes, sometimes we’re big kids).

I have to add that I am no stranger to keeping a home. I may only be twenty-two but I have done my share of housekeeping. I like to keep a very organized, clean home. It’s a big challenge but I do try. I’m constantly looking for new products to make cleaning faster and safer.

I started my blog because I love sharing my opinion. I also love to tell people about the latest and greatest things out there. Whether it be a new movie, cook ware, or even handmade goodies. My blog may be brand new but I’m exited to get the word out about it. It’s not quite like any other blog out there. I really feel that it will open up the world of blogging to a whole new demographic. I want to introduce products to all circles of people. Bizarre News From My Own Backyard

I found this story on the net today. It's from a smaller town in Texas. In San Angelo, Texas a group of teenagers were arrested for the theft of a five foot tall fiberglass sheep. Not only were they arrested, but they are also being charged with felony theft. Apparently the sheep they stole was worth almost $3,000! The teens will most likely be looking at 180 days in jail and a $10,000 fine.

Honestly, the felony aspect of this story does not really surprise me. Judges in Texas have a reputation for being hard asses about the silliest things. Not saying that I know from experience ... cough, cough. In my opinion, they should be punished but definitely not charged with a felony. They're going to be labeled criminals for the rest of their lives because of some stupid teenage prank. Everyone does stupid things when they're young. Come on, it's like a right of passage.

The part of this story that astounds me is the fact that the city of San Angelo spent $3,000 on a fiberglass sheep painted like the American Flag. And that's not even the only one out there! There are painted sheep all over that town! I can only imagine how that budget meeting went. "So, there's thirty some odd thousand dollars left in the city budget. We can either spend it on fixing our roads oooor decorative, over priced lawn ornaments. Hmm..."

1. What do you typically like to do on a rainy day?
On a rainy day I just like to stay inside and sleep or watch movies. Sometimes it's nice to just sit out on the patio with a drink.

2. Tell us about the last time you did something you later regretted, that you can share with us.
I regret not taking my first couple of semesters in college seriously. I think I'd be a lot closer to my degree if I had. If that didn't happen, though, then I wouldn't have met the people I've met ... like my fiance. :)

3. I recently got an email from a lover from a very long time ago. I was asked "Have all your dreams come true?" If it were you and it was from someone you remember fondly, how would you answer the question?
A lot of my dreams from when I was younger have not come true. I'm not a veterinarian and I don't live in a mansion. However, there are so many wonderful things that have happened in the past couple of years that I never dreamed would happen to me.

4. If you had a job interview and was asked, "If you were an animal, what kind would you be (other than human?)" How would you answer that question.
I don't think there's any way to truthfully answer this and still get the job. Unless I said that I would be a hard working tiger who is really organized with their paperwork.

5. Do you think it is a good idea to share with a new lover stories of your past lovers?
I think that's a horrible idea. I just don't see the point in digging up all of that nonsense. Sometimes the past should stay in the past.

6. When do you think it is permissible or even important to lie?
I think little white lies are okay every now and then. Especially if they're told to spare someone's feelings. I'm really not a fan of liars though...

7. What was the last thing you did that you never thought you would?
I got engaged and made plans to start a family. If you would have asked me about that two years ago I would have looked at you like you're insane.

8. What is one important lesson that you learned from your mother?
My mom taught me a lot about taking care of myself and taking care of a home. I think I got a lot of my good-natured spirit from her.

9. What is one important lesson that you learned from your father?
My dad taught me to relax and take it easy. Being wound up all of the time will only give you a headache. I haven't perfected that yet, but I try. Oh, and that life isn't fair.

Pet Stains: The Losing Battle

If you have a dog or any other furry critter then you know pets are messy. No, pets are extremely messy. Taking care of a house with multiple dogs has been a huge challenge. It feels like they are constantly trying to ruin something in the house. You turn your back for one minute and the carpet behind the sofa is missing and someone has urinated under the dining room table. So, needless to say, I have tried about a hundred different cleaning products in an effort to keep up with these mutts. I use these products more than I’d like to admit to anyone I know! For a long time I felt like I might as well just not have carpet ever again. To make matters worse I live in an apartment. Which means I can’t afford to ruin ANYTHING in my own home. Trying to take care of this carpet has just about given me an ulcer. No joke.

Well, in the past months I have fallen head over heals for Bissell cleaning products. They make cleaning up soooo much faster. If the products you use now don’t work then keep reading.

The Pet Hair Eraser Vacuum works really well. I would highly recommend it. I love that there’s no vacuum bag. It saves me loads of money and it’s really easy to just empty all that gross stuff into the trash can. The only think that needs to be replaced is the Hepa filter (about $10) and I’ve only had to replace it once in the year and a half I’ve had the thing. Plus it has this great little bar that flips down in the front to collect extra pet hair. I don’t really have to use it but it’s great for dogs with longer hair. The only thing that I’m not crazy about is the attachments. I’ve used them on my couches and I really wasn’t that impressed. They just don’t work that well.

I also use the Bissell Quick Steamer with Bissell pet stain cleaners. The steam cleaner is perfect for my home because it’s simple and compact. You simply put a little formula and water in the top tank and you’re ready to go. This little machine is also really powerful! The first time you use it you will be astounded (and thoroughly grossed out) at how much nasty dirt comes out of the carpet.

Okay, in the past couple of years I have come up with my own carpet cleaning ritual. I’m not crazy, just a little OCD.

-First vacuum everything very thoroughly. This is so carpet fuzz and large objects don’t clog up the steamer.

-Then it’s time for a once over with the steam cleaner. When filling up the tank use just a tiny bit of the formula. If you use too much you end up with crap left in your carpet.

-After you’ve finished going over everything once, inspect the carpet for any pet stains. (For this next part you’ll need the pet stain spray AND a spray bottle full of plain water.)

For pet stains: First spray the stain with water. Then cover the entire stain with the pet spray. Then spray again lightly with the water bottle. Let the stain sit for about ten minutes. The reason I use the water bottle is because it’s important to keep the stain wet in order for it to lift from the carpet. If the stain dries out it won’t come out completely.

-After treating any stains, steam clean the carpet with water only. Doing this will remove any cleaning chemicals left in the carpet.

Depending on how dirty your carpet is, you may have to steam clean it again using water only. You carpet isn’t completely clean until the water you empty out is almost clear!

*Another thing to keep in mind if you have pets: If you do not remove all of the odor from pet stains in carpet, the animal will keep messing in the same spot! Their noses are much more sensitive than ours and they like to claim their property.

Movies I'm Looking Forward To In 2009

Funny People - 7/31/09
This movie looks like it could be pretty good. Really I'm looking forward the the cameos and one-liners. There are a lot of actors that I like in this movie, too. Seth Rogen, Leslie Mann, and Jonah Hill are together again for this film. And this guy Ken Jeong has been in EVERYTHING lately and he's always hilarious. Lately I've seen him in The Hangover, Role Models, Knocked Up, and Step Brothers ... All really good movies. He's never the main character but he's always got his own side plot.

District 9 - 8/14/09
Alright, I don't usually go for alien invasion type movie. Typically alien movies are poorly filmed and just end up looking cheesy. However, this movie really sparked my interest. I like how the trailer leaves you hanging. It keeps you guessing and really makes you want to see what the hell is going on. I just hope this movie lives up to all of the hype it's created.

I'm a big Tim Burton. However, when Tim Burton is affiliated with a film he tends to overshadow anyone else that works on the film. If I spent years directing a feature film and producer Tim Burton got all the credit I'd be pretty pissed. With that aside this movie looks like it could be pretty entertaining. I've read a lot of mixed feelings about it. Apparently it's not quite up to snuff for some people's expectations. Honestly, that's to be expected. Tim Burton's work is held at very high level. If die hard fans feel this standard is not met you can bet someone's going to bitch about it. If I end up seeing it in theaters then that's great. If I have to wait to rent it from the Redbox, well then so be it.

Zombieland - 10/9/09
Hell yeah, it's another zombie movie! Zombie movies are what I live for. Even if this was the worst reviewed movie in the history of movies, I would still have to see it. As a bonus it's a zombie comedy! You'll notice in the trailer that the zombies can run. If you've ever been paranoid about the zombie apocalypse you can agree with me that running zombies are the worst kind of zombies. I'm always excited to see someone's cinematic view on the undead.

Couples Retreat - 10/9/09
Again, lots of funny people in this movie. (Ken Jeong is in this one too!) This looks to be a romantic comedy about the trials and tribulations of being in a long term relationship. Maybe it's just me, but my opinion of couples movies seems to hinge on my current romantic status. When I'm in a relationship romantic comedies are funny and cute because that stuff happens to us and blah, blah, blah. So if you're single maybe go see Zombieland instead? Hey, it's your call.

Where the Wild Things Are - 10/16/09
Who can forget this timeless childhood story? Okay, I don't really remember what happens in the book, but I'm almost sure that I really liked it. This movie seemss like it's going to be fun, cute, and heartwarming. It looks like the type of movie that both kids and adults can enjoy. It's not like one of those mind numbing cartoons that leaves you wanting to pull your hair out.

2012 - 11/13/09
December 21, 2012 is the date Earth will take a cataclysmic turn. Well, that's what "they" say anyway. I don't know what's going to happen but I'm really glad that they're making this movie. Just from watching the trailer it looks amazing. The only thing I'm not looking forward to is the mass panic and ritual suicides. I guess you can't have your cake and eat it too.

New Moon - 11/20/09
I'm not the biggest Twilight fan but I have to admit that this is my new movie saga addiction. I don't know if I'll read the books but I will definitely go see the second movie! No, I'm not going to see Robert Pattinson ... or Taylor Lautner with his shirt off. You know what, don't judge me.

Brüno Movie Review

"How cool is Jesus? Is he cooler than the Backstreet boys?"

By now if you haven't heard of Sacha Baron Cohen then you've been living under a rock. Cohen is the mastermind behind Borat and the recently released Brüno. (Let's not forget his priceless roles in Sweeney Todd & Talladega Nights!) Yes, his movies are full of side-splitting surprises and Brüno is no exception. In the film Cohen plays a gay Austrian fashionista who has traveled to the United States to become famous once again. If you are offended easily or cannot stand the sight of male genitalia, then this movie is not for you! Everyone else, however, will find this film absolutely hilarious. You will be shocked and you will laugh ... A lot. Cohen is a shameless, self-promoting genius and that's why we love him. I can't wait to see what, or "who" I should say, he comes up with next.

Verdict: Go see it in theaters while you still can!

Sneak Peek: Alice in Wonderland!

Director Tim Burton has teamed up with Walt Disney again to produce an amazing new Alice in Wonderland. However, this is not a remake of the 1951 classic. Tim Burton's new movie is a sequel to the first two books by Lewis Carroll. Burton draws some inspiration from the original illustrations. Of course, Burton has added his own dark and somewhat psychotic spin on things. Over all the movie seems to have a twisted Victorian theme to it.

The movie begins when seventeen year old Alice Kingsley attends a party full of high society snobs. She soon learns that someone is proposing to her in front of the entire party. She runs off and again follows the white rabbit down a hole of mystery and uncertainty. It has been a decade since her last visit to wonderland and she has no recollection of the previous trip. I wonder what trials she will be faced with this time...

Again Tim Burton has managed to bring together an amazing cast. Rising star Mia Wasikowska has been casted as Alice Kingsley. Tim Burton's lovely wife Helena Bonham Carter will be playing the villainous Red Queen. While the White Queen, not portrayed in the 1951 film, will be played by Anne Hathaway. Johnny Depp has also returned to appear in another one of Tim Burton's films. This time he will be playing the Mad Hatter. Judging from the photo it seems as if Depp was born to fill this role. With the help of CGI animation Matt Lucas will be playing both Tweedledee and Tweedledum.

The movie is set to release March 5, 2010.
The movie will also be released in 3D.

Top 10 Ways To Prepare For the Zombie Outbreak

Let's face it. When it comes to a zombie outbreak, it's not a question of "if" but a question of "when". We can't be completely sure of what type of zombies we're dealing with. However, it is certain that the time will come. If you're not prepared for the worst, you won't make it past the first day of infection. The following is a list of things you must do if you want to live.

1. Live on the second floor or higher.
There is a chance we will be dealing with zombies who can't climb up a flight of stairs. If this is the case, the obvious choice will be to hide out as high up as possible. If the zombies do have the ability to run and climb stairs the best alternative would be to hide somewhere only accessible by ladder. It is highly unlikely a zombie would have the coordination or patience to climb up hand over hand.

2. Always have a full tank of gas.
You never know when you might need to make a quick getaway to another town. You do not want to be stuck pumping gas at the local Exxon with packs of zombies stumbling around. Frankly, that's asking to be eaten.

3. Keep a loaded shotgun in your home within reach at all times.
If you don't have a gun of some sort you may want to invest. Zombies are a much bigger threat than your typical burglar. The quickest and easiest way to kill a zombie is with a clean shot through the brain.

4. Have a science lab at your disposal.
It sounds difficult, yes, but may be well worth it. We're almost completely certain that the outbreak will be caused by a highly infectious virus. Hey, somebody's got to come up with the anti-virus. Why shouldn't it be you? While you're at it you may want to brush up on your human biology.

5. Stock up on water and food.
Most importantly you're going to need to eat and drink plenty of water. A good rule of thumb is to have enough clean water and non-perishable food to last your family 72 hours. After that point you will have to take turns going to the super market. (Watch out for highly populated Wal-Mart and Costco stores.)

6. Have the supplies necessary to board up windows and doors.
Ideally you would want to use bricks and quick dry cement to block off windows. If these supplies aren't available use wood and roofing nails to completely cover all exits.

7. Be prepared to live off the land.
Alright, so it's been months and you're still alive. Congratulations! The stores are out of food and zombies have pitched camp right in the middle of town. It's time to start getting back to nature. You're going to need to know how to hunt and find shelter for yourself. I would recommend watching a few seasons of Man vs. Wild. Bear Grylls knows what's up.

8. Have something available to quietly pass the time.
One of the hardest things to overcome during an outbreak is boredom. You're going to get pretty anxious and stir crazy staying in one place for days on end. So you're going to need things to pass the time. However, you've got to keep a low profile. You don't want to advertise your whereabouts to the hungry flesh eaters outside your door. (Don't count on having electricity for very long. Chances are the power will cut out after only a couple days.)

9. Grab some outbreak attire.
Surprise, surprise T-shirts and tank tops are NOT bite proof. You're not Alice and won't get far fighting zombies in boots and a little red dress. Okay leather isn't zombie proof either but it will help some. If possible upgrade to Kevlar at some point along the way.

10. Get some target practice in from time to time.
Last but not least go to the gun range while there aren't zombies invading your home. A gun is of no use to you if you can't hit anything. You'll thank me later!

Billy Mays found dead in Florida home...

Man, what has been going on lately? Recent celebrity deaths include Michael Jackson, Farrah Fawcett, Ed MCMahon, and now Billy Mays. It looks as if Billy Mays was found unresponsive this morning in his home. The cause of death will be released sometime tomorrow. I will miss this guy! I loved all of his commercials. He got me really excited about laundry detergent, cleaning products, & that thing that digs up dirt in your yard. I always figured that one day he would be promoting at least half of the products in America ... and Japan ... and Europe.

Anyway, Billy Mays you and your sales pitches will be missed!

Alright, I've been putting off writing this first blog for a few days now. You only get one first impression, and I guess you could say this is mine!

I'm a twenty-something college student giving online writing a try. Nope, I'm not married and I don't have any kids ... Not yet anyway! I'm opinionated and don't have a problem being honest about things. I guess my ultimate goal with this blog is to review products and let you guys know all about them. I'm also a huge movie buff so look forward to some movie reviews (new & old). Also I've grown very fond of DIY. Why pay more when you can do it yourself for less? I hope this blog is helpful to some of you out there. If all else fails, I hope you have fun reading it!
